Painting a Cinematic Life:Kaohsiung's Billboard Painters

Hsu San-Lu (Asia Theater, Chunghsing Theater, Shinkong Theater, Nantai Theater, Nantu Theater)
1945 — Born in Cimei, Penghu.
1954 — Relocated to Hamasen, Kaohsiung.
1963 — Began apprenticeship at Asia Theater under master Zhou Longyan; also studied Western painting with Lin Tianrui.
1964 — Painted billboards for Shinkong Theater in Xinhua, Tainan.
1965 — Entered military service.
1967 — After discharge, painted billboards for Asia, Chunghsing, and Shinkong Theaters.
1970 — Produced billboards for Nantai and Nantu Theaters in Tainan.
1974 — Moved to Taipei to work as an art designer for Hong Kong First Film Organisation.
1976 — Returned to Kaohsiung to operate an advertising agency.
1978 — Oversaw interior design of Ambassador Theater, serving concurrently as assistant manager.
1987 — Appointed assistant manager of Oscar Theater.
1992 — Served as assistant manager for Chinhsing and Tsuanhsing Theaters.
1994 — Served as assistant manager of Cannes Theater.
2024 — Held the retrospective exhibition Painting and Cinematic Life: 80 Years of Hsu San-Lu at the Kaohsiung Cultural Center. Currently resides in Cimei, Penghu, continuing his artistic practice with a focus on plein-air painting and community engagement.
Tseng Ching-Tien(Hsinglung Theater, Kwangfu Theater, Zuoying Grand Theater, Chingshui Theater, Today Theater)
1946 — Born in Zuoying, Kaohsiung.
1961 — After graduating from junior high school, began work at Hsinglung Theater for over seven months before moving to Kwangfu Theater for further training.
1964 — Completed apprenticeship in Pingtung; also painted billboards for a first-run theater in the city.
1965 — Traveled across Taiwan to study advanced painting techniques under master Jian Xiqin.
1969 — Following two years of military service, briefly worked at Zuoying Grand Theater and Chingshui Theater.
1971 — Served at Today Theater between the ages of 25 and 28 as an art designer.
1975 — Married and opened a personal advertising agency in Zuoying.
1979 — Commissioned by Wenshan Advertising Agency in Kaohsiung to produce architectural renderings.
2000 — Returned to Kaohsiung from Taichung; currently operates a folk antiques business at Neiwei Flea Market.
Yu Ching-Jung (Takao Kan, Chincheng Theater, Shouxing Kan, Hwachiau Theater, Chinbao Theater)
1948 — Born in Kaohsiung.
1963 — Studied painting with Chinese artist Gong Mushan while in junior high school; entered the profession at Takao Kan after graduation.
1966 — Entered military service; prior to enlistment, worked as an assistant at Chincheng, Shouxing, and Hwachiau Theaters under master Chen Pinghe.
1968 — After discharge, ran an advertising agency in Zuoying while also painting billboards for Xibei and Dongnan Theaters.
1983–present — Served multiple terms as head of Pixi Village, Zuoying District, following Kaohsiung’s administrative restructuring and consolidation. Continues to serve in this role today.
Jiang Wen-Shen (Northwest Theater)
1955 — Born in Meishan, Chiayi, and grew up in Liugui, Kaohsiung.
1972 — Entered Xibei Theater in Kaohsiung as an apprentice at the age of 17.
1975 — Completed military service, briefly returned to work at Xibei Theater, and later became a display and window designer at Wufu Datong Department Store.
1991–2016 — Worked as a journalist for The Commons Daily and Taiwan Times, conducting in-depth reporting on the Cishan area.
Present Retired, participated in the Taiwan Southern Art Association of the Republic of China.
Chen Chieh-Hung (Ambassador Theater, Luxury Theater)
1960 — Born in Penghu and relocated to Cijin, Kaohsiung.
1978 — Studied painting under a commercial artist specializing in export-oriented artwork at the age of 18.
1980 — Joined the Ambassador Theater, apprenticing under Zhou Longyan alongside billboard painter Wang Chinghsin.
1983 — Completed military service and established an advertising agency producing signboards.
1986 — Shifted to architectural renderings and real estate advertising during the property boom.
1988 — Resumed formal studies at Kaohsiung Municipal Haiching Vocational High School of Technology and Commerce.
2000 — Founded a gift company after the age of 40, and taught oil painting and organized exhibitions at community colleges.
Wang Ching-Hsin (Ambassador Theater, Luxury Theater, Queen Theater, Oscar Theater, Cannes Theater, Meichilai Theater)
1961 Born in Checheng, Pingtung.
1976 Began training in billboard painting at the Ambassador Theater and under Zhou Longyan upon graduating from junior high school.
1983 Completed military service, worked as a billboard assistant at the Queen Theater in Tainan, then joined an advertising agency in Kaohsiung.
1992 Commenced billboard painting for theaters in Kaohsiung following the opening of Oscar Theater.
1992–2010 Produced billboards for Oscar Theater, Cannes Theater, and Meichilai Theater.
2010 Promoted oil painting through the China Youth Corps in Kaohsiung.
2011 Served as the sixth president of the Kaohsiung Harbor City Art Exchange Association.
2020 Currently works in Maya Art Studio.
Mao Chi-Lang (Sanduo Theater, Hsi Hsiang Feng Theater, Jade Theater, Tongyi Theater, Jihsin Theater)
1964 — Born in Sinhua, Tainan.
1982 — Began formal apprenticeship at the Sanduo Theater under Chung Chinhsiang at the age of 18.
1985 — Entered military service, painting several wall murals for the Tenth Army Corps in Taichung.
1994 — After discharge, worked in an electronics factory; after the age of 30, produced architectural and commercial advertising and assisted with Sanduo Theater billboards.
2000 — Shifted to full-time mural painting, billboard airbrushing, and related work with the rise of digital poster printing.
