Organization
Kaohsiung City's professional cultural institution is Taiwan's first administrative corporation established by a local government. It is also the second administrative corporation with multiple venues. During its initial restructuring phase, it consisted of the Kaohsiung Museum of History and the Kaohsiung Film Archive. It officially commenced operations on January 1, 106 2017. It was included as the second phase implementation of the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts and incorporated into its operational scope on July 1 of the same year, becoming the third specialized venue.
The Kaohsiung Film Archive is the only professional institution in southern Taiwan dedicated to promoting film culture, fostering film education, supporting the film and television industry, and preserving valuable film artifacts. It has set the model for operating an art cinema and was upgraded to a public museum in 2022, becoming the only public museum specializing in film in Taiwan.
Through the collaboration of the Kaohsiung Film Archive, Neiwei Arts Center, or VR FILM LAB, a film culture hub is being created in Kaohsiung.
Kaohsiung Film Archive:
Established for twenty years, it has a total of 159 seats in small and large theaters. Its programming focuses on "classics" and "restoration," bringing timeless film art to audiences and offering diverse cinematic experiences. The theater features a multipurpose lounge, reading area, and the pioneering "History of Kaohsiung Cinema" exhibition.
Neiwei Arts Center:
Opened during the 2022 Kaohsiung Film Festival, it has 205 seats and boasts top-quality audiovisual capabilities, including a DCI-certified 4K Barco laser projector, a UK Harkness perforated screen, JBL speakers for Dolby 7.1 surround sound, TAIWAN KOTOBUKI seats, and 16 sets of sofa seats. With carefully designed aisle spaces, it provides the best viewing experience and houses the only classic 35mm film projector in Kaohsiung. This new theater has attracted major distributors of art films, such as "Cai Chang International," "Taipei Shuangxi Cinema," and "Weiwang International Catchplay," to bring film art closer to the public.
VR FILM LAB:
Established in 2017, it features a "360 Theater" and an interactive exhibition area, equipped with 30 curved egg-shaped seats, offering panoramic immersive visual experiences. It is the only VR venue in Taiwan that plays 8K stereoscopic content, providing viewers with cutting-edge digital art experiences that closely resemble the human eye's perception.
With its comprehensive film facilities in the greater Kaohsiung metropolitan area and the development of the Kaohsiung film culture hub, it continues to fulfill its five core functions: "cultivating cultural viewership," "supporting film industry innovation," "promoting visual education at the grassroots level," "utilizing digital archiving for added value," and "flexible administrative planning." It is deeply rooted in the local community and embraces multidisciplinary approaches, creating a larger audience for film. Furthermore, it strives for cultural equality, enhances public services, aims for international recognition, and builds a sustainable outlook for the next generation of filmmaking.
