Did He Really See More Movies Than You Can Ever Imagine?

For billboard painters back then, one of the greatest perks was watching movies for free—not just at their own theaters, but also at others where they knew the artists.
Hollywood, Japanese, or Taiwanese films—if they liked one, they could watch it twice or even three times.

Three Things Apprentices Feared Most

I. All-nighters
During the cinema’s golden age, several big movies could open at once. Apprentices worked nonstop to finish the billboards before opening day.

II. A Flop at the Box Office
If a movie drew no crowd on its first day, the theater owner would replace it immediately. This meant painting a new billboard, and apprentices losing their much-hoped-for break.

III. Typhoons
Billboards were fixed high outside theaters, and during typhoons they could be dangerous. Apprentices had to secure or take them down, especially if they were large or had 3D wooden structures.

Love at the Theater?

In the golden age of cinemas, billboard painters were in high demand—and sometimes popular with the young women who worked as ticket collectors, ushers, or snack sellers.
Thanks to the proximity, friendships often blossomed into romance, and even marriage.

A Different Kind of Military Service

For billboard apprentices serving in the army, their art skills set them apart.
They were often asked to help with creative work—portraits of officers, military history illustrations, parade floats—sometimes getting them lighter duties or transfers to better units.
