1945年4月1日,美軍登陸沖繩島,慘烈戰爭就此展開,日方有超過十萬人戰死或被俘,部分平民躲藏在洞窟之中,但被錯誤告知若投降會被美軍屠殺或拷打,間接引發集體自殺。影片隨著戰後出生的導遊先生進入洞窟,以獨白之姿講述前人傳承的戰爭記憶,神祕女子在一旁聆聽觀察,召喚著銘刻在地下景觀中的苦難歷史。
小田香:「《GAMA》從頭到尾都在沖繩拍攝,但我最初之所以能製作這部電影,很大程度要歸功於與大阪豐中文化藝術中心的合作。當我在豐中研究地下場域時陷入困境,卻也得知豐中和沖繩之間存在著關聯性,其後我的研究便開始轉向沖繩的地下場域,並潛入其中。我對石灰岩洞穴一無所知,但在《GAMA》中出現的松永光男向我講述了他所傳承的洞窟記憶。
在拍攝接近尾聲時,他說:『我是戰後出生的一代,我是松永光男。』聽到這句話時,我莫名感到糾結。這一切沉澱之後,它在我的身體中迴盪,彷彿在指引我這部作品應該走往的方向。這些記憶傳承給了他,而我們可以通過這部電影觀察到這些傳承記憶的一部分,並得以用這部作品的形式留存下來。我認為這個過程本身就是《GAMA》的內容。」〈山形國際紀錄片影展特刊〉,2023。

On April 1, 1945, US troops invaded Okinawa, sparking a brutal WWII battle. Many civilians hiding in caves were misled into believing they would face American brutality if they surrendered and chose suicide. In caves, Mitsuo Matsunaga narrates their tragic end in a monotone, revealing the underground agony of Okinawa's inhabitants.
‘GAMA was shot entirely in Okinawa but its production was initially made possible through a partnership with the Toyonaka Performing Arts Center. When I came to a dead end while researching underground sites in Toyonaka, I learned that there was a connection between Toyonaka and Okinawa. My area of research started to go in the direction of underground spaces in Okinawa and I descended into Okinawa’s underground. Knowing nothing about the limestone caves myself, Matsunaga Mitsuo, who appears in GAMA, spoke to me about the memories of these caves that had been handed down to him.
‘Towards the end of shooting, he said, “I’m Matsunaga Mitsuo, of the generation born after the war,” in referring to himself. For some reason I winced upon hearing it. After I let it sink in, it resonated within my body as if they were pointing me to the direction in which this work should go. These memories were passed down to him, and we are allowed to observe one part of these inherited memories as they are left behind in the form of this film.
